The Language of the Gods

Art, Shamanism and Indigenous Worldview in South America

Compilation of articles by local and foreign researchers edited by Ana María Llamazares and Carlos Martínez Sarasola. Editorial Biblos,

Buenos Aires 2004, 2011. 320 pgs. In Spanish

The books examines the deep interrelation that exists among art, shamanism and the beliefs about the cosmos and divinity of the native peoples of the Americas, especially exemplified through the silverwork, the textiles designs, ceramics and the symbolism of colour among the mapuche people. It goes far beyond these particular issues, discovering the convergence points: there where art is the multisensory condensation of the worldview, an essential means of reaching sacred planes, the true “language” of the gods; and shamanism, more than a series of rituals or healing practices, unveils itself as a complete and vivid philosophy and a different way of being in

the world.

In her main chapter “Shamanic Art: Visions of the Universe. The Symbolic Language of Transformation”, Llamazares develops a comprehensive and trans-cultural study of the different dimensions of shamanic visionary iconography.

Contemporary Crisis and

Paradigms Shift

Essay by Ana María Llamazares

Editorial Del Nuevo Extremo, Buenos Aires, 2011, 2013, 446 pgs. In Spanish

In this book the author proposes to widen our appreciation of the contemporary crisis to acknowledge the latest transformations

of the collective consciousness. It is an invitation to understand the present

moment from a threefold perspective: epistemological (as a paradigms shift), spiritual (as an opportunity to reconnect with the sacred dimensions) and evolutionary (as the challenge of a qualitative jump of the collective consciousness).  She unveils the socio-historical building of the paradigm that prevails in the West, through Modernity up to the present, showing how classical science falls into crisis and how, as from the twentieth century, the “new paradigms”,

both scientific and cultural, emerge, and

are giving way to a new vision of the world. The book presents a synthesis to understand the paradigms shift and go deeper into holistic thought. It is an indispensable

guide to lead us creatively in the present moment of intense change and uncertainty, and to make us feel participants in the new weaving of meaning.

This article places the subject of shamanism in a larger scope, that of the global contemporary crisis and Western “wounds”.

It presents a general outlook of the main trans-cultural shamanic features; focusing

on the cure process, revisiting Lévi-Strauss’ concept of “symbolic efficacy” in the light

of healing conceptions found in new holistic science. It also provides epistemological elements to reflect upon the physical and psychological suffering that we endure in Western societies, as well as the possibilities of relief in the light of shamanic knowledge. Two classical mythological characters are evoked: Dionysus and Chiron. Both embody the initiation principle par excellence of shamanic fate, and thus remind us that

this worldview is also rooted in our own Western tradition.
